Overview

Iceland is a land of breathtaking natural beauty and awe-inspiring landscapes, and one of the most popular routes for travelers to explore is the Golden Circle. This famous route encompasses a series of remarkable attractions that showcase the country’s unique geological and cultural wonders. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, the Golden Circle is an essential itinerary that promises an unforgettable adventure. Let’s delve into the five captivating attractions that make up this iconic journey.

Tour Plan

Thingvellir National Park: Where Continents Converge

Thingvellir National Park holds both historical and geological significance, making it a must-visit destination on the Golden Circle route. This UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases the dramatic meeting point of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, creating a breathtaking rift valley. Apart from its geological wonders, Thingvellir is also historically significant as the site of Iceland’s first parliament, Althing, established in 930 AD. Visitors can explore walking trails that wind through stunning vistas, delve into the history of the area, and even snorkel or scuba dive in the crystal-clear waters of Silfra Fissure.

Geysir Geothermal Area: Witnessing Earth’s Fury

No visit to the Golden Circle is complete without experiencing the geothermal wonders at the Geysir Geothermal Area. Here, you’ll find the iconic Geysir, which gave its name to all other geysers around the world. While Geysir itself is less active these days, its neighboring geyser, Strokkur, steals the show by erupting every few minutes, shooting boiling water up to 30 meters into the air. The thrill of anticipation as you wait for the geyser to erupt is an experience you won’t soon forget. The surrounding landscape is dotted with bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits, creating a surreal and otherworldly ambiance.

Gullfoss Falls: The Majestic Waterfall

Gullfoss, or the “Golden Falls,” is one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls and a true natural wonder. Cascading over two tiers into a rugged canyon, Gullfoss is a sight to behold. The sheer power and beauty of the falls create an awe-inspiring atmosphere that draws visitors in. During sunny days, rainbows often arch over the falls, adding an extra touch of magic to the scene. Whether you’re visiting during the summer months when the falls roar with melted glacier water or in winter when they’re partially frozen, Gullfoss is a sight that will leave a lasting impression.

Kerið Volcanic Crater Lake

Kerið Volcanic Crater Lake is a striking natural attraction in Iceland, formed in a volcanic caldera. Its vibrant red slopes and aquamarine waters create a breathtaking contrast, making it a favorite among visitors. Estimated to be around 3,000 years old, the lake is relatively shallow but captivatingly serene. Located within Iceland’s famous Golden Circle route, it offers a glimpse into the country’s unique geological history.

Friðheimar Greenhouse and Horse Farm

Friðheimar Greenhouse is a remarkable attraction where visitors can experience Iceland’s innovative geothermal farming techniques. Known for its fresh and delicious tomatoes grown year-round using sustainable energy, the greenhouse also houses a cozy café. Guests can enjoy unique dishes like tomato soup and learn about Icelandic horticulture. It’s a perfect blend of gastronomy and eco-tourism.
The Friðheimar Horse Farm offers visitors an up-close encounter with the iconic Icelandic horse. Known for their unique gait and gentle temperament, these horses are a beloved part of Iceland’s heritage. Guests can watch horse demonstrations, learn about their history, and even interact with these beautiful animals. The farm provides a memorable insight into Iceland’s equestrian culture.

This was our first day of tour and it was an unforgettable experience! From start to finish it was well-organized, with a knowledgeable and friendly guide Sultan, who made the evening both educational and exciting.Sultan kept us informed about the aurora forecast and shared the science. He even helped set up our cameras to capture the stunning display! The most appreciable things is he is very flexible. He also provided warm blankets and hot chocolates which added a cozy touch to the chilly night.

Diamond beach tour
Our guide Sultan, gave us the most breathing taking experien on the Diamond beach tour! The contract between the black sand beach and the sparkling icebergs was surreal, truely a photographer's dream. The entire trip was so well-organized, and our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the glacier history and the geology of the area. He made extra surprise stops by different attractions. We also had plenty of time to wander around and take it all in. I'd highly recommend this Golden circle Private Guided Day tour.
